2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

New for 2016
For 2016, Mercedes-Benz has discontinued the E400 Hybrid, along with a number of AMG® models. The E63 AMG® S sedan and wagon remain as the only AMG® model offerings things year.
Excellence Above All Else
There are a lot of mid-size luxury sedans out there, and most of them are trying to emulate the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
For critics and consumers alike, the E-Class remains the standard in its segment, thanks to sophisticated technology, impressive performance, and luxurious amenities. There’s a reason why the Mercedes-Benz ad tagline is “the best, or nothing.”
Powertrains and Performance
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers one of the most comprehensive powertrain lineups of any car on sale today. So whether you want performance, fuel efficiency, or both, there’s an E-Class model for you.
First up is the E250 BlueTEC®. It packs a 2.1-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 195 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Like all E-Class models, this engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel economy is the obvious upside of a small diesel, and the E250 doesn’t disappoint. The EPA rates it at 33 mpg combined (28 mpg city, 42 mpg highway) with rear-wheel drive,* and 31 mpg combined (27 mpg city, 33 mpg highway) with 4MATIC® all-wheel drive.*
Next is the E350, which boasts a 3.5-liter gasoline V6 rated at 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. It gets 23 mpg combined (20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway) with rear-wheel drive,* and loses 1 mpg in the highway category with all-wheel drive.
The E400 packs a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that produces 329 hp and 354 lb-ft, but produces the same EPA-rated fuel-economy as the less powerful (but larger displacement) E350 engine.
The ultimate E-Class model is the E63 AMG® S. It features numerous performance upgrades built around a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Total engine output is rated at 577 hp and 590 lb-ft. With the mandatory all-wheel drive system, the E63 AMG® S returns an EPA-estimated 18 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway).*
Features and Trims
All 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class are available as a four-door, five-seat sedan, while the E350 4MATIC® and E63 AMG® S are also available as a wagon. Prices start at $52,650.**
For the most part, the only difference in equipment between models is the powertrain, although the E63 AMG® S does come with some specific performance features in addition to the standard equipment.
All E-Class models come standard with Mercedes-Benz COMAND® infotainment system, leather interior, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, interior ambient lighting, and a tilt/telescoping steering column, among other features.
In addition, the E63 AMG® S gets its own seats, steering wheel, interior trim with Alcantara headliner, and an AMG® instrument cluster with lap timer.
Beyond the generous list of standard equipment, notable options include Mercedes-Benz Keyless-Go®—which allows the driver to lock and unlock the doors and start the engine without using the key fob—the Mercedes-Benz apps suite (subscription required), a park assist, and numerous upholstery and trim options.
There’s also a Premium Package, which includes a premium sound, system, heated front seats, power-folding exterior mirrors, and an active multi-contour driver’s seat on E63 AMG® S models, as well as other goodies.
Exterior/Interior
The exterior styling of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class echoes the flagship S-Class sedan, giving the smaller Mercedes a sophisticated and distinctive look. As with many modern Mercedes-Benz sedans, buyers can choose between the traditional chrome grille and hood ornament, or a sportier mesh grille with inset three-pointed star logo.
The interior is just as upscale, with standard leather seating and a choice of wood trims. The seats are comfortable enough to work in your living room, yet provide decent support during vigorous driving. The controls are well-laid out, and everything feels solid and ready to withstand years of hard use.
Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, 11 airbags, Collision Prevention Assist, PRE-SAFE® predictive safety system, and ATTENTION ASSIST® driver drowsiness monitor.
Mercedes also offers a Driver Assistance package that bundles several electronic driver aids, including DISTRONIC PLUS® adaptive cruise control with Steering Assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, PRE-SAFE® automatic braking, and cross-traffic assist. The blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist features are also available separately in the Lane Tracking package.
Bottom Line
With a wide variety of powertrains, options, and even a wagon body style, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has everything a luxury-car buyer could want.
