2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

New for 2016

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class class gets a number of changes for 2016, chief among them are styling tweaks to the G550 and a new instrument cluster, as well as a new 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine and an available adjustable suspension. For 2016, the G-Cass lineup is also bolstered by the new, V12-powered AMG® G55.

Fortune Favors the Bold

The Mercedes-Benz lineup isn’t bereft of excellent SUVs, but for those seeking something a bit more unconventional, a bit more daring, the G-Class SUV is your answer.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is as unique as they come. It’s a brawny and brutish SUV, capable of tackling the toughest terrain. Yet in true Mercedes-Benz fashion, the G-Class offers so much more. It combines a military heritage with modern technology and luxury. Needless to say, it doesn’t look or feel like anything else on the road.

Performance

The G-Class will take you virtually anywhere you want to go. From the base of a volcano, to the top of a mountain. That unrivaled performance is largely thanks to three outstanding engine options that feed its hunger for adventure.

First up is the G550. It’s powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine that produces 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic is the only available transmission, distributing power to all four wheels via a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case. The G-Class also sports an electronically locking front, center, and rear differential for more aggressive off-road use.

Next is the AMG® G63. It ups the ante with a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8. This powerhouse of an engine serves up 536 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque, making sure trail, road, hill, or mountain are obstacles that never stand in your way for too long.

In terms of transmission, the AMG® G63 swaps out the G550’s seven-speed automatic for an enhanced AMG®-tuned seven-speed of its own. Despite its size, the AMG® G63 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 5.3-seconds.

If it’s even more power you crave, then Mercedes-Benz has just the model for you. The AMG® G65 is new for 2016 and packs an even greater punch, courtesy of a certifiably insane biturbo V12 engine that belts out 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. It too is fleet of foot, besting the AMG® G63’s sprint speed by half a second.

Both AMG® models share the same transmission, and in true AMG® fashion, both feature handcrafted engines, adding to their quality and prestige. All three models are capable of towing up to 7,000 pounds.

Features

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a five-passenger SUV. It’s offered in three trim levels (G550, AMG® G63, and AMG® G65), with prices starting at $119,900.*

Mercedes-Benz vehicles are renowned the world over for their luxurious features, and the 2016 G-Class is no different. Standard equipment on all G550 models includes 19-inch alloy wheels, heated power-folding mirrors, and automatic wipers.

Inside, the G550 comes standard with a variety of amenities and features. Highlights include dual-zone automatic climate control, two 12-volt power ports (one for each seating row), and a 115-volt household-style outlet in the cargo area. Also included are the COMAND® electronics interface with a seven-inch display, a navigation system, voice commands, traffic reporting, and 12-speaker harmon/kardon® surround-sound system—complete with Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity, CD, and DVD player.

The G550 also incorporates a number of helpful technologies that are designed to make your drive more enjoyable. There are front and rear parking sensors to help get in and out tight spaces. A rearview camera to make backing up easier. And adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. Offered exclusively on the G550 is an optional electronically adjustable suspension with modes (Comfort and Sport).

Upgrading to the AMG® G63 gets you a more powerful turbocharged V8 as well as 20-inch wheels, performance brakes, an AMG®-tuned suspension, sport exhaust, AMG®-specific styling elements, upgraded leather upholstery (optional on G550) and interior trim, and much, much more

The AMG® G65 adds a turbocharged V12 engine as well as unique styling flourishes, 21-inch wheels, and diamond-stitched seat and door upholstery.

The G-Class can also be outfitted with a number of individual options. These include a stainless-steel brush guard, carbon-fiber or premium wood interior trim, a heated steering wheel, a synthetic-suede headliner, and a rear-seat entertainment system. Buyers can also select from a number of optional wheel styles.

Design

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class may look like a big box on wheels, but it’s design is anything but square. From its advanced LED lighting to it classic upright shape, this towering SUV is the pinnacle of refinement.

The G-Class is also built like no other SUV. Its sturdy ladder frame and galvanized steel body are hand-welded. The frame is flowed with hot wax to resist corrosion. Even its wiring harnesses are hand-loomed. It takes more than 40 hours to craft each G-Class virtually entirely by hand.

That quality applies to the interior as well. The G-Class’ cabin is almost entirely handcrafted to exquisite detail. There’s premium leather on the seats and dash, and polished wood and chrome accents abound.

Like its commanding frame, the G-Class’ controls are also a nice blend of utility and elegance. There are three prominent locking-differential buttons are displayed front and center, and exist alongside a crisp seven-inch tablet-style command screen.

Comfort is another high point. Thanks to its squared shape, headroom is practically unlimited. Cargo capacity is just as generous, with over 45 cubic feet behind the second row of seats, and over 75 cubic feet with those seats folded down.

Safety

Its sturdy design will make you feel safe, but the 2016 G-Class doesn’t stop there. Standard safety features for all models include four-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, and side-curtain airbags. Also included are front and rear parking sensors, hill hold assist, a blind-spot monitoring system, a rearview camera and Mercedes' mbrace2 emergency telematics, which includes services such as automatic collision notification, an emergency response button, stolen vehicle location and remote lock/unlock.

Verdict

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the few luxury SUVs that back up its brash looks with outright capability. Plenty of models excel in either luxury and capability, but no other model does both quite like the 2016 G-Class.
